Ladderback Jacquard, Sunday December 14th, 1-4pm, Workshop
What do you do in stranded knitting when you have to work a large area of just one color? Traditionally, knitters will "catch" the other color behind the work, but it often peeks through to the right side. In this presentation, you will learn and practice an alternate technique for floating colors behind the work, it's not intarsia and it originates from machine knitting techniques. Ladderback jacquard is quite simple and with just this class's practice, you will be ready to cast on more difficult stranded colorwork with confidence. Class project will be a mug cozy worked in the round.
Prerequisites: Students should have some experience working with 2 colors and knitting small circumferences in the round. Instructions will be provided for finishing with a steek for the mug handle, but no previous experience is needed for that.
Materials needed: Approximately 180 yards total of DK weight yarn in a wool or wool blend: 90 yards each of two highly contrasting colors, one lighter in color than the other. The darker color can be variegated. US6 or US7 needles for working small circumferences in the round (dpns, two circulars, magic loop). Removable stitch markers.
Homework: With the lighter color yarn, cast on 50 stitches, join for working in the round and work 3 rounds of 1x1 rib. To check gauge, the rib rows slightly stretched should fit comfortably around the base of a favorite mug.
