Learn how to Steek your knits Workshop, Sunday February 22nd, 1-4pm
Cut your knitting!!! Oh no, soooo scary (and fun!)
Steeking is a knitting technique where you knit a tube in the round and then intentionally cut it to make a flat piece. It is especially useful for colorwork to avoid purling. It involves creating a reinforced "bridge" of extra stitches where you cut, securing the edges with hand-sewing, crochet, machine stitching or felting to prevent unraveling.
- Knit in the round: You knit your garment as a seamless tube, working only with the right side facing, which is easier for colorwork.
- Create a steek: You add a column of 5-9 extra stitches (the "steek") where the cut will go, often using contrasting colors.
- Reinforce: Before cutting, you secure the edges of the steek by sewing or crocheting along the sides of the cut line to hold the stitches.
- Cut: You snip the center of the steek column, turning your tube into flat pieces.
- Finish: You pick up stitches along the cut edge to create button bands, facings, or armhole borders.
In this workshop we will practice several techniques to secure your steek. And as time permits, we will pick up stitches to create a button band. There will be homework prior to the class. Make sure when you sign up, you give a good email so I can send out assignments.
You must be able to knit colorwork in a small circumference.
